Part 6/2021, CREATIVE WORK: INSPIRATION FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

NEGATIVE SPACE.

Our challenge in June 2021 is designed to teach you an important principle of photo composition. It’s called Negative Space.

Your task: Use a lot of free space in your images.

Negative space is the space in a picture where nothing is really shown. This sounds strange at first, but in the end this free space is intended to direct the viewer’s focus to the subject and to give the subject itself room to breathe. It is not always true that there is “nothing” to see. In the negative space area of a picture you can often find structures, colors or in the best case even lines that lead to the subject. Of course, in this case you have to give a lot of thought to the composition of the image. Should the negative space only take up a small part of the image or do you go “all in” and make a minimalist image in which your subject plays a subordinate role. Typically, negative space in an image is placed to the top or side, but experiment with other image compositions as well. The most important thing is that they suit your subject!
