Part 5/2021, CREATIVE WORK: INSPIRATION FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

FLAT.

We want you to say goodbye to depth and take pictures that are as flat as possible. Our challenge is called: Flat.

Your Task: Take a flat photo.

Actually, “flat” images are rather negatively perceived. Everyone always wants deep images and as much three-dimensionality as possible in his photo. Nevertheless, even flat subjects – if they are executed correctly – can lead to great results. A flat image does not have to be boring.

Quite the opposite! If you work with patterns, structures, and lines, then such a picture quickly becomes interesting. Think of facades of houses, for example. A door, window, or paint that is crumbling away can draw attention. A “lay flat” image, i.e. a draped scene with many objects photographed directly from above, is a great exercise to better grip image composition.

Also, just take a look down. Leaves, flowers, or structures on the ground can also become a flat but still exciting image. Especially with flat subjects, the light is important. If it comes from the side, your subject gets a three-dimensional level despite the flat perspective and the shadows let individual elements stand out.
